Empower your users - Lessons learned in the past 9 years of utilizing SharePoint

After 9 years of implementing SharePoint, Australian MVP and author Ishai Sagi will share the lessons he learned from different projects on how different organizations use SharePoint - the failures and the success stories. This session will focus on information architecture decisions that make a difference - for better or for worse.

With SharePoint being a collaboration platform, most organizations find they have to make hard decisions on how to implement the collaborative functionality. Should we allow users to run wild, create sites and add content, or should we control what is built in SharePoint and restrict users to certain actions? Should we implement the social networking features in SharePoint, and if so, how do we avoid users misusing the system? Should SharePoint development remain with developers and IT administrators, or should users gain access to SharePoint designer or 3rd party tools?

In this session you will discuss all these questions and more, and hopefully leave with a firmer understanding of the questions you need to ask yourself when implementing SharePoint. This session is highly recommended not only to everyone about to implement SharePoint, but also to anyone who has implemented SharePoint and is wondering what to do next…

Implementing Search in SharePoint 2010

SharePoint 2010 Enterprise Search, especially with the features of the integrated FAST Search is better and more powerful than ever before. Because of the various versions and wide range of functionality, first we have to build and understand the comparison matrix of SharePoint 2010 Search. After that, I'll demonstrate a lot of best practices for building and administering an effective search infrastructure, including SharePoint 2010 Search Engine, FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint, search federation, metadata managemen t serving the effective search, information architecture investments.

In this session you will learn:

  • When is it enough to deploy the out-of-the-box SharePoint Search, and when do you need to install FAST Search Server as well?
  • When is it useful to use SharePoint 2010 as a search engine, and when you should federate?
  • SharePoint 2010 Search - FAST Search - Federation comparison matrix
  • * Why is it necessary to deploy more than one Search site?
  • Why is it important to invest the information architecture in order to achieve and effective search architecture?
  • What is the connection between the metadata management and Enterprise Search? Best practices of creating a search-friendly taxonomy.

Upgrading your custom developed solution from SharePoint 2007 to SharePoint 2010

In my session I will share my personal experience in upgrading a SharePoint 2007 component to SharePoint 2010. During that process I gained a lot of valuable knowledge on creating components for SP2010 using Visual Studio 2010 extensions for SharePoint, and several tips on what to do (and not to do) today to be prepared for 2010 and to have an easy migration of customized solutions to 2010.

We will cover an overview of VS2010, integratin g with the new ribbon control, upgrading an existing components and finally - the importance of packaging and version management. My unique insight with an ISV delivers a different point of view that most developers benefit from.

Best Practices for User Adoption with SharePoint Solutions

Even with the most well architected, well designed SharePoint solution, there is no guarantee that users will be jumping over themselves to use it! SharePoint provides a convenient and often personalized way for your employees to find the information and tools they need to be more productive. However, as great SharePoint is, it comes with a unique challenge: You often have to convince users to give it a try! Employees have other options for accomplishing many of the tasks SharePoint enables, even if some of these options are “sub-optimal.”

In this presentation, attendees will learn the key elements of an effective user adoption plan and be presented with numerous case studies and examples of how a variety of organizations successfully deployed their SharePoint solutions.

Let's Get Social: Effective Strategies for Leveraging the Social Computing Features of SharePoint 2010

Most organizations recognize that success depends on people working together. Social technologies allow users to interact and share information in ways that help them work together more effectively. As more and more people embrace social technologies in their private lives, they will expect to find this functionality in the tools they use at work. While these technologies may spark raised eyebrows or even outright fear in many business executives, it's very clear that social computing is the new black.

In this presentation, attendees will learn how to overcome potential barriers to leveraging the new "community" features of SharePoint 2010 and best practices for delivering business value with social computing solutions.

Organizing the Documents in SharePoint 2010

In SharePoint 2010, documents can be organized not only into document libraries and folders, but also into Document Sets that provide us the capability of managing, editing and downloading documents in a set, can share metadata and version numbers, moreover we can initiate workflows for the whole document set.

In my session, I will focus on the organizing and management of documents in document libraries, folders and document sets - when to use which one and why. I will build a decision matrix for them and help you to choose the best solution for your case.

In this session you will learn:

  • Why and when do you need to use the new metadata management capabilities? How can you get the more benefits of it? Best practices for creating a good taxonomy, teach the end users and make them understand why it's so important.
  • Why content types are so important and how to build a good and effective content type hierarchy?
  • What you have to know about content organizing rules? The relationship between metadata, content types and content organizing rules.
  • Best practices for creating effective, well-organized information architecture with metadata management, content types and organizing rules.

Design Complex Workflows FAST and WITHOUT CODE

Organizations have different types of needs when it comes to workflow. Some might need a process -centric workflow, while others require a content life cycle management workflow or just an administrative workflow.

SharePoint 2010 offered some improvement in this area, allowing users to design, model, and draw diagrams using Visio. This approach has its limitations, however, when numerous or complex workflows need to be designed.

Users soon realized that creating complex workflows in SharePoint was a challenging and lengthy process. Fortunately, there are products that automate the various workflow stages, from the draft to the recording, publishing, archiving, and distribution of the workflow.

In this session, we will show you how to create workflows with Visio, SharePoint Designer or Visual Studio and how to understand the capabilities and limitations of these environments. Afterwards, we will show you some alternatives that will allow you to quickly create complex workflows and better manage them.

Measuring SharePoint adoption and engagement

With SharePoint implemented, an organization’s next step is to guarantee its effectiveness and ensure adoption. Web analytics holds the key. However, SharePoint value has been hampered due to limited native SharePoint reporting and the complexity of the SharePoint software model. But there are options.

Through collection of usage statistics, you can: optimize the content, design, and social community features available to employees, partners and customers; improve employee productivity; expand business intelligence; and minimize impact on the bottom line.

In this session, we will discuss web analytics industry trends, how to measure SharePoint success and evaluate technology that’s required to obtain visitor level reporting for SharePoint sites. Organizations will be able to obtain employee-centric insight into the use of their SharePoint environments, including:

  • Display of specific Web Parts
  • Document activity, such as checkouts, downloads and approvals
  • Paths taken and SharePoint breadcrumbs followed
  • Business transaction completions
  • Search intelligence, such as search terms, results viewed and search refinements.
